glenstal.ie news...[14/01/09]Junior XV Win Mungret Shield - 4 in a rowMungret Shield (U15) Final [6/12/08]Senior XV Win the Limerick City U18 CupFor the first time in the history of the School the Seniors beat St. Munchins 18-6 to win the Limerick City Cup which was inaugurated in 1901 and was won by a certain Landsdowne!!! Out Half Mike O’Flynn opened the score for Glenstal in the first half with a well taken drop goal. He then added to the score with a penalty before half time. In the second half, Brian Costigan scored a try after a well-worked maul in which the forwards physically knocked St. Munchins over their own line, something of a rarity in Munster schools rugby and all the more pleasing. Shane Cosgrove scored a try under the posts at the end of the game following a clever intercept which Mike O’Flynn subsequently converted. This was a well-deserved win for the Senior team and Captain Duncan Casey and his players can be justly proud of this magnificent and historic performance. Celebrations were tempered somewhat with the serious injury to Brian Costigan, who many agree is the finest flanker ever to put on a Glenstal jersey. Brian was subsequently named Man-of-the-Match. Brian dislocated his ankle and broke a bone in his leg in a most unfortunate accident ten minutes from the end of the game. The Glenstal team were all the more determined that they would not be beaten despite such a significant loss and they dedicated the Cup Final win to Brian. Brian subsequently had two pins and a plate put into his ankle. We wish him a speedy recovery and there is hope that he might make it back for the latter stages of the Cup. Knowing Brian’s steely determination, anything is possible. [6-12-08]Junior XV through to Mungret Shield FinalCongratulations to Ian McCarthy and the Junior Cup Squad for their defeat over Midleton College in the Semi Final of the Mungret Shield. Glenstal had most of the possession throughout the game and were very unlucky not to score a number of trys in both halves. However, their superior skill showed in the end and the score of 11-3 flattered Midleton. Glenstal have now qualified for the Final of the Mungret Shield. Congratulations to all concerned. We look forward to another trophy in the cabinet in the Playroom to add to the Limerick City U18 Cup. GOAL Jersey Day 2008
