Trip to Tanzania 2008

Renowned artist, Dolores Johnson, has donated a unique landscape painting of Doonbeg in support of the project to promote education of young people in Benedictine schools in Tanzania. This project is being undertaken by a small group of 5th Year students and Fr John. This group wil be in Hanga Abbey Schools for July 2008, teaching English and computer skills. In return they will hopefully benefit from the soccer and musical skills of their peers but above all from the social contact.

Tickets cost just €5 from john@glenstal.org

The draw will take place on 2nd May 2008 at Willie Darcy’s Corner, Tralee.

Canvas is approx 70cm x 50cm.

Munster Schools Track & Field 2002

More good news - a large squad competed at the Munster Schools Championships in Cork Institute of Technology on Saturday 25th May in appalling conditions (and clashing with the Munster v Leicester Heineken Cup Final). As well as several 4th places, Ruari McLoughlin (2nd Yr) took Gold in the Junior Javelin and Paul Collier (1st Yr) took Bronze in the Junior Discus. Both will compete in the All-Ireland Schools Championships in Tullamore on the 1st June.

North Munster Schools Track & Field 2002

Congratulations to those who competed at the North Munster Track & Field Championships. We brought home our biggest medal tally since the Brian Liddy-era (mid 90s). Our team won the All Round Minor Cup - last won by us (jointly with St Munchins) in 1994.

Pat O'Malley (III) broke the Inter 2 school 100m Hurdles record of 15.3 which dated back to 1970, the new record stands at 15.2.

Stephen Roche (VI) continued his winning streak in the Sprint and 400m Hurdles. Stephen has won a medal in every hurdle race that he has competed in at North Munster and Munster, both outdoor and indoor since he was a 1st Year. In recent times no other athlete has been as consistent, dedicated or successful.

On May 25th we send a large team to the Munster Championships in Cork. One to watch is the Inter 4 x 100m Relay Team (Conor Quinn, Pat O'Malley, Diarmuid O'Keeffe & Denis Halton) are not only hoping to qualify for the All Ireland Championships but also to break the school record of 46.1 set in 1972.

We wish them all good luck - "faster and further".

Starting Out Young

Making history recently, 12 Transition Year students from Glenstal Abbey became the first Limerick students to be awarded Marketing Institute certificates. Commenting on the Step Into Marketing programme, Trevor Fitzgerald, business teacher at Glenstal described the course as "an excellent introduction to marketing as one of the most important business disciplines, which has given the students invaluable insights into the importance of being customer-focussed, no matter what career they choose".

Pictured at the presentation of the Marketing Institute certificates are (l-r): Kenneth Finn, chairman, Marketing Institute, Mid-West region; Thomas Gaffney, Glenstal Abbey School and Eamon Dillon, education officer, Marketing Institute, Mid-West region.

Admitting that the course taught him a lot about planning and self-control, Thomas Gaffney who came fisrt in the class said it will be of huge benefit to his Leaving Certificate ambitions. A unique of the Step Into Marketing programme is the way it involves the local business community, inviting them to be judges of the students' sales presentations on completion of the course.
